Doodle of the Week

Here is a carpet doodle. After weeks and weeks of almost nothing but endless medallion doodles, a trend which is continuing still, it was nice to see this one in the pile. 

Besides not being endless concentric circles, this doodle has some elements that are worth noticing. First, there is a lot of "border" type patterns in place of my familiar single shape in repeat. You can see it in the double scallop + diamond + dots and in the wave + half circle + dot motifs.

The other thing that I find interesting is the varying corner treatments of the circle in a square motif. It is far more normal for me to treat them like this or this. I visually blank out the shape, rather than use it.

Fall is apparently setting in starting tomorrow. Up here in the GPNW, the change from summer to fall is often like a switch has been thrown. I have often been amazed at how sudden it is. So, since today is supposed to be the last warm day for the foreseeable future according to the weather guys, I do not want to spend it here in front of the computer. I will have plenty of time once the blogging seasons set in.

Doodle of the Week

This week's doodle is another bunch of medallions. It is amazing how I can endlessly produce these things. But that is how it is with doodles, you don't control them at all. They happen and they become what they want to be. Apparently, mine like being concentric circles.

Because of the last embroidery, which reminded me of looking at pond water under a microscope, I went looking for some images of microscopic things.

This site has images of micro fossils, like this little lovely, a biscutum novum, whatever that might be. It is really worthwhile to spend some time clicking through this site.There are lovely images of things that are too small to see. I especially like the diatoms.

Isn't the world grand? Even though they are so tiny, they are beautiful.

This archive of images from BGSU is another amazing resource, and the images are in color, Oooh. Pretty. Consider yourself warned, this site opens a new window for each image. Do look at them though. They are totally worth it.

And don't miss the Diatoms of the Great Lakes from the University of Michigan. Or the California Academy of Sciences Diatom Collection. Stunning images, and they are large.

Doodle of Last Week

 

This should have been your doodle on September 11th.

I like that there is a whole field of medallions. Then, for some unknown reason I tossed in a random square.

Life is just like that sometimes.

Embroidery #12

Here is the latest embroidery in my Books and Needles Project.

These embroideries are done completely free handed. They are slow motion doodles. By embroidering these doodles, as opposed to drawing them, time stretches out like it would in a dream.

It looks like something you would find if you were looking at a drop of pond water under a microscope. Did you ever do that in science class when you were a kid? It was such a thrill to see that a drop of water was actually teeming with unseen creatures and plant life.

I like this one, it seems joyful, exuberant and full to bursting with life.

Doodle of Last Week

I should have posted this either last Friday or Monday, but end-of-summer type stuff and general malaise got in my way.

I chose this group because of the odd shapes this doodle took. I like the (more or less) central doodle with the curling tail. It looks like it is half organic and half machine, and it is ready to start chugging off the page. It reminds me of something from album cover art. Now, I am going to have to figure it out or it will bug me to no end.

I also like the doodle that turns a corner with its eccentric edgings. It looks like bits of several carpet doodles have been pieced together.
